Kandhkot Gas Field is located in District Jacobabad, Sindh. It is located in upper Sindh on the right bank of River Indus, 88 km southwest of Guddu Barrage and 44 km south of Sui Gas Field. Twenty seven wells have so far been drilled and completed in the Kandhkot Field. In 2008, two horizontal wells, Kandhkot 26 & 27 were drilled for effective drainage of the reservoir.

The field was discovered in 1959 by the well KDT-1 and was put on production in 1987. Kandhkot is PPL’s second largest operated field in terms of reserves and production. To date, 27 gas wells have been drilled at Kandhkot.

The Kandhkot Gas Field structure consists of three anticlinal domes. These are West (W), Northeast (NE) and Southeast (SE) Domes, each of which displays four-way dip closure. 

Geologically, Kandhkot Gas Field is located within the Indus Basin, which comprises the eastern part of Pakistan on the west bank of the Indus River. The Kandhkot Gas Field is situated within what is known as the Suleiman Sub-Basin.

The exploration history starts when exploration well Kandhkot-1 was drilled in 1959 and discovered natural gas from Sui Upper Limestone (SUL) and Sui Main Limestone (SML). In 1971, another well was drilled which confirmed the presence of gas in SUL and SML. During drilling of the Kandhkot wells, data from Wireline logs interpretated that apart from SUL and SML there is reservoir potential in Habib Rahi Limestone (HRL).

To maintain production level and to drain gas from the area lying below the river bed, slant well Kandhkot No. 23 was drilled for SML reservoir in the southeast dome and completed as gas producer through perforations from SML reservoir.

Kandhkot Well No. 24 was a slant well drilled for SML reservoir in the southeast dome of the Kandhkot Gas Field. The well was drilled and completed as gas producer in SML reservoir.

Kandhkot Well No. 25 was drilled in the northeastern dome and was drilled down in SML / SML and completed as gas producer in SML reservoir.

Recently, Kandhkot Well No. 26 & 27 horizontal wells were drilled successfully in SUL & SML reservoirs in Kandhkot Gas Field. The wells have completed as gas producers in SUL and SML reservoirs.
