To ensure consistency and ongoing improvement in organizational policies and procedures and provide quality outputs in line with international standards for all stakeholders, Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has been moving towards ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS) certification of all its field locations and departments. The company established the Monitoring and Inspection (M&I) Department in 2005 for Quality Assurance and Control of technical and administrative operations, works performance and procurement. The department is mandated to ensure compliance with ISO 9001 standards for all fields and departments.
The ISO 9001 certification process kicked off with the development of manuals on Quality Management System and Standard Operating Procedures based on gap analysis and filling studies. These, in turn, helped steer the implementation of audit processes through continuous internal and external exercises over a period of three years. During this time, the company invested in developing in-house expertise for undertaking internal audits. About 45 engineers from various fields and facilities were trained as ISO 9001 lead auditors who provided hands-on-experience in executing audits.
As a result, 13 PPL production facilities and departments – Mazarani, Adhi, Chachar and Kandhkot, Sui Field Gas Compressor Station, Sui Production, Sui Purification, Sui Field Engineering and Monitoring and Inspection, Design and Construction, Drilling Operations, Joint Operations and Projects departments– are ISO 9001-2008 certified.
In order to sustain and update ISO 9001 compliance, all certified facilities and departments will undergo regular surveillance audits, following which reports will be prepared and follow-ups on implementation of corrective measures carried out, if required, by the M&I Department.
Moreover, M&I initiatives also ensure continuity and functionality of the company’s key assets and equipment through baseline surveys and periodic testing. Besides, inspection of annual turnaround processes and new and operational projects together with a review of daily production and plant shutdown reports are also carried out under QMS.
