Exploration Frontier

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) is leading hydrocarbon exploration in geologically complex frontier basins of Pakistan, where state-of-the-art technologies and expertise are being applied to identify new play concepts and overcome several challenges such as security, infrastructure, remoteness, terrain, difficult seismic data acquisition and optimum subsurface imaging for delineation of hydrocarbon bearing traps.

PPL exploration strategy with emphasis on frontier areas was formulated to improve the company’s reserve replacement ratio.  Since the Indus basin, is in a mature phase with large, easy-to-find discoveries already made, what remains is relatively small and complex prospects with limited reserves and insufficient economic returns. Against this backdrop, exploring the frontier areas of Balochistan basin and offshore Pakistan remain a viable option for reserves replenishment and company’s growth. These areas, though high risk and high cost, are considered to have potential for large discoveries.

The current portfolio of Frontier Asset comprises exploration licences of unexplored areas of Pakistan and international onshore leases in Iraq and Yemen. Company is pursuing an aggressive exploration program in these operated areas, whereby it has completed several seismic surveys and has planned to drill numerous exploration wells, which is unprecedented in the Company’s history.
