PPL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme is as old as the company itself. The company’s maiden development project Sui Model School (SMS) was established in the 1950s, soon after PPL started commercial operations at Sui Gas Field. Though PPL’s CSR interventions tend to be concentrated in and around operational areas, the company also extends support to welfare and development initiatives in other parts of the country.

PPL took a step forward towards developing a sustained and focused CSR Programme by establishing the Pakistan Petroleum Limited Welfare Trust (PPLWT) in 2001 that works as a separate body mandated to oversee CSR initiatives, ensuring cohesion, consistency and transparency. In line with the approval of PPL’s Board of Directors, the company has dedicated a budget of 1.5 percent of annual pre-tax profit for CSR activities. Responding to the needs of relevant local government bodies, civil society organizations and communities, the ambit of PPL’s CSR portfolio has widened over time to include education, health, infrastructural development and enhancing livelihood generation opportunities. Following the tumultuous earthquake that struck Northern Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir on October 8, 2005, PPL is also working on rehabilitation of disaster affectees.

In recognition of PPL’s commitment to social development, the company won the Corporate Philanthropy Award for four consecutive years from 2004 to 2007.
